The guys over at doshdosh just released a cool article with some tips on how to get more Twitter followers and how to use Twitter in order to maximize its potentional.

“If you are interested in increasing your Twitter followers and want more people to be reading your messages, then take a look at this list of Twitter users with the most followers and you’ll see that almost everyone on it is famous or well known for reasons other than Twitter. Run your eyes down the list further and you’ll notice the same thing: these Twitter users built their large audience through their already established popularity. Darren has written some useful articles about Twitter on his site but he built his following mainly because he has a very popular blog and not because he was inherently entertaining or helpful as a Twitter user. In other words, he grew his large subscriber base because he cleverly integrated his brand/blog with his Twitter profile.

Try to see what these guys with mega lists on Twitter are doing and simply copy their methods. … or maybe not.

Building a Twitter following has little to do with how you use Twitter. So let’s talk about what I think will help you to get more Twitter followers.

Maximize Visibility: You need to treat your Twitter just like you would with any other website. You need to make it look interesting so that people actually WANT to sign up to your Twitter account and follow you…

…This means that if you want to increase your Twitter subscriber base, you just need to do one thing again and again: Drive web traffic to your profile. This sounds obvious but many people overlook this fundamental principle and focus instead on less relevant details like Twitter usage times/frequency.

*Why would someone want to follow me on Twitter?*

Create a tool/application and promote your profile alongside it.

Buy a banner ad to target tech-savvy audiences, link it to your profile.

Use Twitter as a tool for tech/customer support.

Organize a contest through your Twitter profile

Include links to your profile in email/forum signatures.

Evangelize Twitter on your blog/other blogs and include a link to your profile.

Connect your blog and other social media profiles to your Twitter page.

Learn to pitch Twitter influencers with articles relevant to their interest

Explicitly ask another user to recommend your profile or exchange recommendations.

Apart from these strategies, there’s also another sure-fire way to increase your Twitter followers and this simply involves the act of following other users.

Mass Following Twitter Users: The No.1 Methodology of Spammers

Twitter is similar to many other social networks in numerous aspects, particularly when it comes to befriending behaviors. Continually adding Twitter users as friends allows you to increase the amount of followers you have.

Nowadays, the Twitter community has grown more aware of these ’spammers’ and many tools like the Twitter Blacklist and Twerpscan have been developed to help Twitter users weed out people who try to follow many users in order to build an large audience. Still, a portion of Twitter users (perhaps the new ones) tend to add anyone who befriends them.

A fake profile set up by another Twitter user in February 2008 as a social experiment. The Osen account followed 41,798 Twitter users in one month and 7,847 users added him as a friend, a 17%+ follow-back rate.

Apart from the risk of being labelled a Twitter spammer and increasing the noise on your Twitter stream, this method still works. Most Twitter users don’t like it if you’re simply following him/her to broadcast a message and if you don’t monitor them equally in return or engage them in conversation. Unless you’re a popular celebrity of some sort, one-way attention doesn’t work very well for Twitter.

In any case, only viewing Twitter as a broadcast platform to drive traffic to your websites is a limited perspective, especially when your Twitter followers offer a wealth of knowledge, connections and opinions you can use to improve your business and personal skills….”

Some say it is the “new” Facebook and some say that this will be the future of keeping in touch with friends; short & efficient messages to keep friends updated on your activites.

Are You on Twitter Yet?

I first heard of Twitter in August 2007 and joined right away. In other words; I was an early adopter But for various reasons, I didn’t do much with it and have never actually done anything to promote my tweet. Too bad! I could have had thousands of followers by now, I guess, if I just had got my act together and actually done something smart for a change…hehe…

Guess I’ll have to update my Twitter more frequently now, because Twitter is actually pretty cool. Really; it’s awesome!!

I hate spam sites, scraper sites and websites that gives absolutely no quality to the reader. In my head, at least, my niche sites give the readers some kind of value. I’ve been building mini-sites and putting up content on various blog platforms and free sites for months and as a result of that my income increased several hundred percent over a few months time.

I provided quality but at the same time my main goal was of course to get the visitor to click through to the merchants salespage so I good get a nice affiliate payout in the mail… I wrote unique content and I think most of the articles actually answered a question or concern the reader might have had. I had several pages in the same niches obviously. I had multiple pages in the top 20 search results for any of the search terms I targeted and everything went fine…

Untill…:

All the sites/pages I had in one-niche was removed from the search results (or moved from i.e. position #6 in Google to #801) Overnight.

SHIT! I could not figure what was going on and I was running around like a decapitated chicken for days trying to figure out what went wrong. My checks from clickbank was reduces by 25%.. Then the same happened with two more niches as well… Over a period of one week my clickbank income was cut in half.

I did provide quality content, right?
NOT in the eyes of Google, no!

Over the last couple of weeks or so, I have been reading the (allegedly-) LEAKED Google Quality Reviews Guidelines. Yes, you heard me right… Google - the king of all search engines - have HUMAN EDITORS!!!

Appearently, the Google automatic filters loved my websites and gave them good pagerank and top positions. Then, it seems like the human editors where going through the niches I were in to weed out the spammers and advertisers…(remember; Google wants us to PAY for advertising!!). Most of my sites were dumped…
Time to reconsider!!

So, I need to reconsider the way I’ve been doing my marketing online, it seems. And so do you if you are building niche sites like they teach in the 30Day Challenge 2007 ->.

• What can we do to make google actually accept our sites without thinking it is spam?

• How can we provide more quality to the readers of such mini-sites to not only satisfy the reader but also the Human Editors Of Google?

We need to come up with a way we can work as affiliates and at the same time make both the readers and Google love our content. You can find the LEAKED Google Quality Review Guidelines here. I do not know if this document is fake, or if it is “leaked” on purpose by Google but it should provide some good insight into the way the Human Editors work…
